A New Full Synthetic Metalworking Fluid Based on NOVOTEC® CL800 Brings Health and Quality Benefits to German Metalworking Company.

In the metalworking industry, cooling lubricants are needed in many milling, drilling and grinding applications astools, work pieces and equipment must be protected from the heat  and wear. Currently the most common cooling lubricants consist of water for cooling, mineral oil for lubricating and emulsifiers to stabilize these water-and-oil mixtures.

Back in 2015, cwTec (Hage, Germany), a supplier of high-quality products for the tea, coffee and food industries, and the cleaning and renovation of sewers, was searching for an alternative to oil-based metalworking fluids. “We were really dissatisfied with these substances,” notes Managing Director Christoph Wenk, who founded the company, “mainly because of the associated health issues, but also because of issues such as high consumption, low durability and increased downtime owing to contamination.”

“We tried all kinds of alternatives, but none of them worked, until I discovered GELITA’s performance additive NOVOTEC® CL800," adds Wenk. GELITA created a new liquid additive that’s based on a novel class of functional proteins – and it has more in common with the company’s revolutionary cleaning additive NOVOTEC® CB800 than its name. Presenting a paradigm shift in a wide range of domestic and industrial applications, GELITA scientists are changing surface technology from hydrophobic to hydrophilic.

NOVOTEC® CL800 is a new performance additive for fully or semi-synthetic metalworking fluids. The proteins create an aqueous lubricating film on the surface of the metal that protects both tool and workpiece, improves the cooling performance and surface quality and.  essentially ensure clean surfaces on both machines and workpieces.

Following a field trial, Wenk was convinced by the innovative product and implemented  newcooling lubricants containing NOVOTEC® CL800 throughout the plant. “We use the new product in about 30 turning, milling, surface and cylindrical grinding machines,” says Wenk, adding: “Our experience with NOVOTEC® CL800 has been extremely positive. It was an excellent decision all round.”

Wenk was also very positive when it came to the use of rarely used machines: “In the past, we had to replace the cooling lubricant every six months because it had degraded. Now, we’ve been working on one of these machines for two years with the same product. Plus, unlike traditional oils and emulsifiers, the NOVOTEC® proteins are skin friendly and do not generate harmful vapors. In addition, NOVOTEC® CL800 is fully biologically degradable and free from both allergenic agents and harmful substances. It fulfills the requirements for a vast array of modern production processing steps at the highest possible level.”

As well, machines, parts and metal chips remain residue-free or can easily be cleaned with water. By forming lubricating layers of hydrated protein chains that facilitate cooling and help to protect surfaces from wear, NOVOTEC® CL800 can be implemented into a wide range of metalworking fluids. Now, after four years of use, Wenk concludes: "For any company that machines and grinds materials such as brass, aluminum, titanium, plastics and/or hard, soft or corrosion-resistant steel, I can wholeheartedly recommend switching to cooling lubricants containing NOVOTEC® CL800.”
