Collagen holds us together

Collagen is produced from protein extracted from animal-derived raw materials. It is classified as a foodstuff and must be declared as collagen or edible collagen on products.

A natural protein, collagen represents approximately 30 per cent of the total protein in our bodies, and the same is true for animals. Collagen from GELITA is a highly purified protein that has been approved for human consumption.

Native collagen is a scleroprotein comprising a peptide chain made up of some 1050 amino acids. Three of these chains are intertwined in the form of a triple helix. When these helixes are further intertwined, collagen fibrils are produced; these are then stabilized by cross-linking them into a three-dimensional network. This structure renders collagen insoluble in water
