Small Cause, Big Impact
Leaks in softgel capsules are a common problem. They occur when seams come apart, and even the smallest of splits can cause capsule contents to leak out, potentially spoiling a batch of products during manufacture, packaging, transportation or storage. Whether leakers occur or not depends on many parameters, including machine processing speed, temperature and the raw materials in the capsule shell and in the fill. However, by changing just one parameter – the gelatin – leakers can be significantly reduced and even eliminated completely.
A Game-Changing Solution
But leakers are no longer unavoidable, thanks to our ground-breaking new product EASYSEAL®. Switch to EASYSEAL® Gelatin for your softgel capsule shells and wave goodbye to leakers for good, enhancing your production process, quality and yield at the same time.
The Scale of the Problem
In order to identify the problems caused by leakers, GELITA conducted a survey among 20 leading softgel manufacturers from around the world.
Here are the Key Findings:
- 100 per cent of manufacturers experienced leaking softgels at some point – either during production, drying, storage, stability testing, transport or packaging
- Most commonly, leakers occurred during or after the drying process, in rotating tumblers or trays
- 85 per cent of softgel manufacturers identified a link between leakers and their fill, with lecithin, oily pastes containing minerals or powdered plant extracts being the most challenging fills
- In the absence of a solution, most softgel manufacturers were willing to accept a certain amount of leakers of up to 5 per cent
