The Evolution of Expertise
Our journey began in 1875, when GELITA – originally called Deutsche Gelatine-Fabriken (DGF) – began industrial-scale production of gelatin at a factory in Schweinfurt, Germany. The brand name GELITA® was registered in 1934.
In the 1930s, softgel encapsulation was revolutionized by American inventor Robert Pauli Scherer’s rotary die process, enabling automated production. To capitalize on these manufacturing advances, GELITA established a joint venture called RP Scherer GmbH in 1950 in Eberbach, Germany, and retained its stake in the business for 62 years.
The Capsule Competence Center (CCC) was set up in 2003 to harness the expertise of our capsule application specialists around the world. In 2009, the CCC was integrated into the Pharmaceutical Competence Team (PCT), whose remit went beyond capsules to reflect GELITA’s global strengths in pharmaceutical applications.
In May 2022, further demonstrating its commitment to innovation, GELITA merged the PCT into its new GELITA Pharma Institute (GPI®) – our global knowledge hub for excipients for pharma and life science applications.
