Orthopedics Expert Panel recommends Specific Collagen Peptides

Bone health is crucial for menopausal women and the aging population due to the increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures associated with age-related bone loss. Maintaining optimal bone density is essential for reducing the likelihood of fractures and preserving overall mobility and quality of life. In India - according to statistics - approximately 61 million people have osteoporosis, with women being disproportionately affected compared to men.

However, osteoporosis is not exclusive to women; one in eight men also experiences this condition. Fractures, particularly hip fractures, are a major concern, with over 250,000 hip fractures occurring annually in India alone, severely impacting the affected individuals’ quality of life.

Early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis is essential to minimize fracture risk. However, available treatments often face safety and compliance risk. To overcome these issues, there is a need for neutraceutical option like specific collagen peptides.1

Therefore, collagen peptides offer promise as an ally in supporting bone health.

A recent panel of 13 orthopedic experts from across India came together to review clinical data and discuss the importance of specific collagen peptides as a treatment option in osteopenia and osteoporosis. Experts mutually agreed: collagen peptides may play a crucial role in bone health.

Why are collagen peptides so important? Well, collagen is the fundamental structural protein in bones and help support bone mineral density (together with calcium and Vitamin D.) Specific collagen peptides, such as GELITA´s Bioactive Collagen Peptides (BCP®) FORTIBONE® are targeted collagen protein, easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and travel through the bloodstream to the bone marrow.

There, they stimulate osteoblast activity to increase collagen formation and by this providing the structure for a stable bone mass.

A study has shown that taking specific collagen peptides (FORTIBONE®) leads to a 4.2% increase in bone density in the spine and a 7.7% increase in the femoral neck.2 Additionally, changes in bone turnover markers were observed. A clinically relevant increase in bone density was even noted in a 4-year follow-up study.3 No fractures were reported in the patients, and there were no interactions with other medications or tolerability issues.

Based on these findings, the experts recommend integrating once-daily oral intake of 5 g of specific collagen peptides into the standard treatment of osteoporosis for a minimum of 12 months.4 These peptides, combined with calcium and vitamin D, can be used either alone or synergistically with other osteoporosis-inhibiting (bisphosphonates/denosumab) or bone-building (teriparatide) treatments.

So, collagen peptides are much more than just a trend – they are a glimmer of hope for millions of people affected by osteoporosis.
