“Contains healthy vitamins”, “Helps your digestion” and “Boosts your circulatory system” – these are some of the claims intended to underpin the increasing degree of health consciousness in the general population. In order to protect the consumer and to provide manufacturers with clear guidelines as to claims made on nutritional value and health on packaging, labels, presentations and advertising, the European Commission intends to publish appropriate regulations. In future criteria such as the “Nutritional Profile” will define whether a particular foodstuff is good or less so in the sense of a balance diet.

The health “traffic lights”
Up to now, manufacturers have been able to promote the health benefits inherent in their products or certain ingredients included as long as adequate scientific evidence is available. No misleading claims may be made. In future, all such health

and nutritional claims must be approved by the EU authorities. Claims that have not been approved in this way may not be used, regardless of whether scientifically proven or not.
